Quake III Arena skills about to pay off

In taking a Monday morning “breather,” (which I do online; a little twisted I admit) I learned that id Software is working on the next Quake project, called Quake Live. It’s some kind of heavy wrapper for Quake III Arena which adds all sorts of stats and human networks and structure to the experience outside the game, so you can learn that you are currently the world’s 23,512th best Quake player.

This is fantastic news to me, because here we are 9 years (!) after Quake III came out, and I still have not moved on to other video games. I don’t really play it often - once a month for 30 minutes or so - but 100% of my video game skill is currently invested in Quake III. (Well, 90%; the other 10% is in Slime Volleyball - I’ve made it past Psycho, but never won.)

Anyway, I’ve forgotten how to find good multiplayer servers with Quake III, so I’ve pretty much been playing single player against Xaero on Nightmare for the last couple years, and I’ve learned his AI pretty well. It’s true, I’m kind of dancing in my own little world of single minded videogameness, no doubt missing out on the wonderful adventures on 360s and Wiis all the cool kids are having. Whatever, it’s fun, and I’m about to p0wn on Quake Live.

(Not really. I’m under no illusion that I won’t be pummeled into the ground by serious gamers.)
